    This is how we were taught the technique by Mr Mike Tracey who was the Director of coaching & National Coach when I was still a member of the B.A.A. during the 1980s.... He always emphasised the importance of kuzushi before the application of any of the Randori no Kata Waza... That is, the heels of the feet. OFF the tatami, mat or floor with uke floating momentarily before taking your uke down or throwing them safely... He was also a 3rd degree/dan judoka!!... I think kuzushi has been misinterpreted for sheer strength and nothing else... I have seen this decline from the Tomiki aikido I was practising all those years ago... Its a shame... but let's hope it's reintroduced as the way to effective technique as I was taught...

    The Russian guy has the same ideas as me!! I was doing this kind of practice in reversing or mirroring way back in 1990 and was doing it with all the 17 randori waza, in what I or we called randori kyogi... Now they call it toshu randori.... It doesn't matter now, as I was not in the organisation of the British Aikido Association, but left in 1993 after 18 years of hierarchical BAA practice, much of what I thought too political, narrow-minded, delusional, and restrictive... So I practised Tomiki's aikido independently for my own purpose which was geared much more towards self-defence practice rather than "sport"... I think free randori is very important in the real application of techniques, but as with all combat sports, the rules make it less practical for the reasons of "safety"...In my club, we would practice randori with head protectors and mitts so we could use more atemi and would include punching, kicking, grabbing as well as the "traditional attacks" and taking to the ground, combinating with ne waza (like judo) for more realism... The tanto randori I never liked as I thought it was totally ridiculous in its attacking form with a "tanto" and too restricted with just one thrusting attack ... Being independent gave me the ideas that I could experiment freely with all my students who found it very practical... It looks like the Russians are thinking with more freedom and I predict will be the better when it comes to winning in shiai in the future... Good luck to them...

    Good 'ol Loi ah Lee, one who explains the rationale of the techniques of Tomiki's aikido... A good Koryu teacher and expert of the Koryu Katas of Tomiki Shihan's aikido...

  • @towag
    @towag 6 років тому

    Been saying this for years, before and ever since I left Tomiki aikido in 1993 after 18 years of towing the BAA line... I always felt and knew that tanto randori shiai was totally ridiculous!!....Went my own way and learnt so much more for myself by experimenting with people and ukes from all sorts of martial disciplines and different styles of aikido, that didn't cooperate or give it to me... Really learnt to do aikido from all sorts of attack... If I got hit, it was my fault, not ukes!! Got banged numerous times, but was used to it from my amateur boxing days, but it was worth it to know for sure how to make the techniques work for real!! I got far more respect from other martial artists who came and practised with me and FELT that aikido was really effective when applied for real... It's the only way to learn aikido for self-defence... THEN you get good at it... The majority of aikidoka today are just playing at it, which is useless, but the delusion carries on for most... Sad, but true...

  • @ebor8402
    @ebor8402 6 років тому

    This guy is skilled. However, he is wrong when he says that randori is as close to self defence as you can get without injuring people. As close as Aikido comes, but it is still a far cry from anything remotely realistic.

  • @mickymorton7148
    @mickymorton7148 7 років тому

    with tomiki style aikido I guess if you think in a positive way & not negative with practicing tanto dori and with it having a competitive side to it where you are using a points system. with a rubber tanto to strike uke for points. I guess it's used for scoring with that black tip at the end to see where uke as hit & for judges to see clearly that's my opinion but when you are training for self defence doing tanto dori techniques in tomiki aikido I personally think it's best to use rubber knifes or wooden tanto to add to realistic training that's my opinion to look at this I used them back in the day during my time with Shotokan Karate so I guess you could use them in Tomiki ?

    Hmmmm.... Mike Tracey Sensei was teaching this to me way back when I was a brown belt in 1978 -79 and after when I made it to the yudansha grades!! Of course there is a lot of judo in Tomiki's aikido, he was a judoka after all as it was his base training... There was also a lot of Aikijujutsu influence as well, bearing in mind he was taught aiki jujutsu as well which also uses judoesque throws!!...... What's new Bob? And people wonder why?.... I really don't see very much kuzushi in aikido these days...IE where the heels leave the deck before the throw?... You have to use the hips and centre to effect that while at the same time being "soft" something that Mike Tracey taught me when I practised at his club or when he came to mine... You couldn't feel him!!.... Without that, it is only strength and power.... Which is what I see in most of the tanto randori now, except the odd bout.... One of the Hogg brothers from Ken Broome's stable is a good example of applied technique in what I consider good "tanto" randori shiai... I my opinion Toshu Randori shiai is the way to go, but add more realistic attacks, maybe use some protection like you see in amatuer boxing or taekwondo. The tanto aspect is just getting ridiculous!!.... If it was a real knife there would be a lot of blood spilt end of!!..... As for the dildo?... Weeeelll, what really is the point? It really has no more use other than to display the correct distance for waza to be applied which seldom happens when players get into the clinches and wrestles for a technique, where judo would be far more applicable!! Which is what I see being applied even though it's adapted judo!!... As for grabbing or attacking the player with the tanto? In reality it would be suicide!! I love Tomiki's aikido, but the tanto randori is just a joke and open to too much ridicule to those who have actually faced a real knife threat.... I can tell you it is a very scary and daunting feeling!! I have been there and I can tell you now, I did not use a silly grabbing technique first!!.... Yes I did shit myself, but survived, which it is what martial arts is all about if you are a true martial artist?.... If Tomiki's aikido is to be considered a martial art and a legitimate system of self defence I think it has to change to reflect that... From what I see now it has evolved into a combat sport without the "martial" which we only see in kata... If that is the future for Tomiki's aikido then it should not be considered a martial art anymore, but a combat sport derived from a martial art. The kata choreography derived from a martial art?... That's fine for displays, but the line has to be drawn where the "martial" is concerned and all gendai "martial arts" should be called combat sports.... Like Judo or Kendo.... To summarize, simply do away with the "tanto" randori or call it something else.... Like defence against a dildo....
